Narayanpet is distinct and unique among the handloom clusters of Telangana state for its affordable bright and traditional weaves. Sarees are a good combination of tradition, comfort and simplicity.
History – The Narayanpet style of weaving goes back to the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji, who traveled through the small town while on a campaign. The few weavers in the travelling party chose to stay back and continue their work here, which is how the textured Narayanpet sarees got their distinct Maharashtrian influence.
Characteristics – Narayanpet sarees are characterized by temple motifs in the borders, while the surface design is woven in a contrasting shade with small or big checks.
This revival and skill enhancement project in Narayanpet with the support of Microsoft and UNDP Disha is to sustain the livelihoods of weavers through design interventions and to assist the weavers through market access. 100 women Weavers have collectivized as Swashakthi Mutually aided cooperative society to produce and sell together in Narayanpet.
